Whitening N Facelift

Check this bag...
Done? OK, now that a look at this..... errrr, handle-less, cracked, falling apart... bag.
Notice how ugly the part that's already ripped and torn is? Ewwww...
Ow, btw, this is how the bag looks like from the other side. In previous reincarnation, this was my favorite bag, which I use very often. Two years later, as much as I love this little one, I didn't have the heart to be seen in public carrying a bag whose handles are falling apart. Yes, I'm pro green. Yes, I believe in consumption reduction, but still... So, I decided to do the second mantra of green lifestyle: recycle.

With some whiteout, a little creativity, and a new handle from another bag, this is the result...
This is how I make do with the single handle when I should have two of them.
The best of this experiment is? If it didn't work out, there is no regret since I was going to toss the bag away anyway. Now I can wear it again, in two different ways - the front side and the back side - ala Style N Season! Hey, I'm a narcissistic, that's why I wrote Style N Season on the bag.

Have you ever had that facelift moment when you almost throw a favorite fashion item to the trash bin, but at the last moment found a creative way to do a little plastic surgery? Please share your stories!

Butterfly On Flowers

Have you ever wake up one day and feel like "I just want to feel comfortable today." ?
I have. This morning. So that's why I'm wearing the basic black pants and this green top.
Luckily the top has some pretty embroidery detail going on the bust seam, so it still looks cute. I hope. And I don't want to go with just basic black blazer, so I'm wearing this brown jacket with lots of stitches detailing.
Then suddenly I thought: "Well, here are the flowers, where are the butterfly?" Usually I don't wear fancy necklace with this top since I consider it has enough going on with the embroidery. But with the so-so ensemble, I become a bit bold and throw this necklace.
Butterfly on flowers!

Notice the dark brown stitches on this DKNY tan/brown jacket: collar, pockets, along the seams.

I'm wearing layers of bracelets in different colors and textures. They're mother of pearl, glass, and beads. And look at the lining of the jacket peeking through!

I love the metallic shine of these sandals!

Overall, my today's outfit is deceptively simple but actually enriched with many details which, to me, are pure private pleasure!

Pretty Blue Eye(let)

What would you wear to hangout with a shopping-dynamo girlfriend? Something cute and comfortable, that is. I'm having lunch at Marche Plaza Senayan with my beautiful friend, DeeDee, then do a little window shopping. Since I know that she beats the Energizer Bunny when it comes to shopping, I know that I need some wears that can last me aaaaaall day.

Nothings screams modest comfort more than a pair of cropped jeans. Ok, made-over jeans skirt also does the trick, but today I'm wearing pants. Jeans pants. And nude Roman-style flat sandals. Heels are much more fashionable, but they won't do for a shopping marathon. Not for me, anyway.

White top and blue jeans basic can be made versatile with some accessories. Pink is my signature color, and it's just so cute, feminine and girlie. However, this morning when I picked out these outfits, the word that came to mind was: fresh. So I decided to sprinkle the basics with some bright turquoise blue.
Check out the earrings! Ow, did I tell you that I loooove eyelet? It's feminine, pretty, old-fashion, and sweet. I layer with a baby blue tank top underneath.

A big bag is essential for a girl on a busy and fun day out. This bag contains all my essentials, wallet, beauty kits, vitamins, keys, and a water bottle. Mineral bottled-water costs an arm and leg at the malls and fancy restaurants. I drink a lot, so carrying my own drinking water supply saves me a pretty penny!

Please, Ladies, No Showing Off That Body Of Yours At Church!

*This post is mostly for Christian and Catholic readers, and here I talk about ladies fashion only. However, if you're non-Christians, and are into modesty, you might be interested to read this post. Please note that this post doesn't intend to judge, challenge, provoke, nor seek approval from anyone. It intends to share and promote something that I personally believe in: modesty.*

One might wonder, why do I have to dress "properly" for Church? It's what's inside that counts, not the "packaging", isn't it?
Alright. I'll be the first to admit that I would never brag myself of being a very good Catholic, though I try. I skip mass a lot. I don't understand why. I mean, all the rest of my family members are "good and proper" Catholic, never missing a single attendance of Sunday mass in years. I guess I'm the black sheep in the family. Not that I'm proud of it or anything. It's just a plain fact.

Note: I'm glad to say that it has changed. Now I attend mass regularly. Praise the Lord for using my wonderful husband to change my heart and took me back to Sunday mass. ^__^

Some of you might know that I used to spend several years living in Texas, USA, for school and work, so yes, I can say that I have been blessed experiencing cultures and lifestyle of both the East and the West. Many Americans (or Texan) culture I had absorbed in those years are not applicable once I'm back in Asia. Many of the habits adopted during those years I dropped once I stepped back in Jakarta. However, one custom I carried, and still carry with me until this very day: when you go to Church, prepare not only the heart and the soul, but also take care to show up with appropriate attire and wholesome look. You dress up when you go on a date. You dress up for job interviews, for work every day, for PTA meetings, for cocktail parties, for your spouse, boyfriend, for dinner with the in-laws, for ladies night with your girlfriends, for clubbing on the town. So, why not make utmost effort to dress up and look your best for those weekly "meetings" with Your Creator?

Houston, the city where I lived, is a big city. If I'm not mistaken, it's the 4th biggest city in the US after New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. However, unlike in East Coast and West Coast, the Texans - famous for their easy manner and sunny disposition - are very casual. People basically look like they just threw on a baggy T-shirt and sweatpants or shorts to go the mall, grocery shopping, eating at restaurants, or strolling the mall. The women barely wear any makeup. You would never find that "casualness" in Jakarta, where image and keeping up appearances are everything and people dress to impress the second they walk out the door. Perhaps that's a generalization, but mostly that was what I saw.

Having said it all, Texas also has a strong conservative Catholic influence, and despite their everyday casual they DO dress conservatively for Church. Most of the ladies wear lovely dresses. Not just skirt. Dresses. Men wear pressed shirts and pants. Some even wear suits. Khakis and polo shirts at most casual. No jeans. No shorts. No sneakers. No sandals. And note this: the ladies cover themselves. Yes, in a "secular" country like USA, the Texan Catholic ladies cover themselves at Church. No mini skirts. No tank tops. No skintight clothes. No midriff showing.

No sloppiness. No immodesty. For men and women, boys and girls alike.

Amazing and hard to believe, if I didn't witness it myself, Sunday after Sunday after Sunday.

There, the term "Sunday clothes" suddenly made sense.

So you can imagine my shock, when I came back to Indonesia, to Jakarta, and saw what I saw at the Church there. Jeans are everywhere, worn by men and women alike. The boys wore those baggy shorts that look like something they'd wear for basketball games. Sneakers, even flip flops are prominent. And, wow! I was blinded by so many skin shown by the ladies. Looks like skintight tees and hipster jeans are basic staples for most Jakarta young girls' wardrobe. Even the moms wear spaghetti strap dresses and minis. Some younger moms even wear sexy shorts. Hello... Is this a Church, or a mall?

Don't get me wrong. The ladies look absolutely gorgeous. Moms craddling babies still look slim and trim like teenagers. But, please Girls, Ladies, Madames, don't you think you should dress more appropriately and properly for Holy Mass?

When I go to Church, my intention is to have that special meeting with God. Ok, God is everywhere, yes, but you know what I mean. I take pleasure in seeing beautiful things and beautiful people. But looking at women who show off TOO much of their bodies? And especially, in a Church during Holy Mass? Oh no...

But...

"I can wear whatever I want!"
"It's the men's fault if they cannot keep their eyes from straying!"
"Who are you to tell me what I can and cannot wear!"
"Are you jealous that it is I who is the center of attention, and not you?"
"At least I'm showing up for mass, unlike you with that spotty attendance!"

Alright. Now let's try to run this scenario in your mind. By the way, I read this on the internet somewhere, it was a sermon written by a Catholic priest, but I couldn't find it again, so I'll just write my own version.

Here I am coming to Church for mass wearing... a HUGE hat, topped with a carnation of attention-grabbing peacock feathers sticking up two-feet high onto the air. Strutting confidently, to the front pew, I'm pretty confident that the hat is gorgeous and the latest fashion straight from the runway, not paying attention to the jaws-dropping and people whispering along the church aisle. People just can't stop staring at the spectacle, including YOU.

"Who does she think she is, coming to mass wearing a hat like that!" you are thinking vehemently.

The mass is getting started. The priest says a prayer. The choir sings beautifully. The blue-green peacock feathers are swaying gracefully to the music rhythm. THIS, is supposed to be the time to focus on God. However, people cannot concentrate. Everybody's eyes, including the priest's, and YOUR eyes, keep coming back to the peacock feathers, swinging lazily from side to side, they even seem to grow more prominent and annoying by the minute.

You become upset because you cannot worship peacefully.

Finally the mass is ended. People are leaving the church. You are waiting for me in front of the door.

"Miss, please, next time you come to mass, do not wear that hat," you say.

I look down at you haughtily and answer with loud voice: "I can wear whatever I want! Are you jealous that people are looking at me instead of you?"

You reply. "It's not the case! That's a very nice hat you have there. But it's so showy it's DISTURBING to those who want to worship! WE too, have the right to pray without distraction!"

I look straight at your low-cut top that shows your cleavage and your low-rise skintight jeans that shows the shape of your lower body. "Same goes with those immodest clothes that you're wearing, especially for young boys and our male mass-goers!"
Ok, this is just fiction, of course. But you get the point, rite. Can you imagine if your male friends get back at your body-showing church clothes by coming to mass wearing speedos, muscle T-shirts, or bicycle pants? Hey, afterall, you Ladies are allowed to wear mini skirts and hotpants! Well, even if the man has an amazing body, it would not be something I would want to see when I come to church for Sunday mass! And I don't think you would, too.

I read this once. A woman who constantly shows off too much of her body for all the world to see is like a hostess who frequently uses her best china plates and silverware to feed just about everyone, not just her honorable guests, but also mice and rats of the house. (Ouch)

So, my lovely Ladies, let's start making a change by dressing more appropriately for church, shall we? There are many beautiful, fashionable outfits that are modest and suitable for church. Didn't our Lord create women as beautiful creatures?

Let's be attractive! NOT attract-ing!

What do you think, Ladies?

Tips n tricks:
  1. If you, like me, do not own a single pair of jeans that are not low-rise nor tight, try to wear rather long, loose tops that cover your buttock area. It's not very convenient for the worshipper who sits behind you to accidently see your butt-crack because your jeans are so low.

  2. If you insist on wearing tank tops or spaghetti straps to Church, layer it with something: cardigan, crocheted top, lacy shirt, whatever. Tank top also can be worn underneath a low-cut top.

  3. If you cannot sit down comfortably without tugging at your skirt every five minutes or so, it means your skirt is just too short.

  4. No hotpants for church. Period.

  5. Look pretty! Polish your nails, use a little bit of make-up, cute accessories, shoes and bag. Looking modest is not equal looking frumpy! You come to church to worship God. Have a little respect, will ya.

French Connection

Pastis is a French liquor. And it's a delightful little bistro in Kuningan, right across the street of Jakarta's posh Four Seasons Hotel. It's a pretty establishment with white gleaming interior, romantic and cozy atmosphere. AND after work tonite, I'm having dinner there.

I usually wear this white ballerina-style skirt with black jacket and white blouse, because as you can see, the embroidery details on the skirt is black. However, sometimes, as sophisticated black and white combination is, it can be so b-o-r-i-n-g. That's why today I pair the skirt with an old navy blue baby tee and navy blue blazer. Hey, who says you can't combine black and navy?

The navy top has a geometric diamond design, and I found it hard to coordinate with anything since navy is not my color and I don't own many navy clothes, so I'm delighted to be able to get it out of the piles in my closet today!

The Anne Klein jacket has some stitching detail in white thread. My boss teased me, "Are you wearing your jacket inside out?" Ouch. Men. What do they know about fashion. Except men designers of course. And male hair stylists.

Again, my sense of Miss Matching came in these white earrings and white bangle I'm wearing. The butterfly necklace I threw on the last minute, afraid that it would be too much for office look. The bright red is almost an afterthought, because all the navy and white look so color-coordinated I look like Miss Prissy.

Anyways, these are some snaps taken from the dinner.

Poetry Corner: Conviction

Awake. Be humble. Love. Watch. Listen. Pray. Do.

I saw continuity
I saw eternity

There must be something more
than this daily, ordinary life

A high beauty
forever beyond the reach of all evil

***

"Why do you believe in God?
It is not that you have seen Him?"

I looked above
It was a magnificent starry evening
Millions, billions of sparkles in the sky
Bright, brilliant, and beautiful

I smiled

"No, I have not."

I am no saint nor holy man
I'm just an ordinary girl

Maybe I have never seen the face of God
I do not need to

I have seen the work of His hand

And I do not BELIEVE...

... I KNOW

Summer Salvage Yard

Summer is coming!

It means time to change my decoration. I get bored easily, so changing the look of my living space is one effective way to channel my inner anxiety and creativity.
Unfortunately, though, I'm not genius enough to create an image from scratch like many professional interior designers do. I just pick a few things from around the house and "scatter" them around in the nicest way possible.
It also helps that I have this eccentric tendency to collect (not to hoard, mind you) pretty jars, cans, bottles, and other containers. I just arrange them all in an extra cupboard, and whenever I need something to decorate with, I just browse through the collection, and I almost always come up with something relatively nice looking. It's cheap, it's fun, and it's environment friendly since I recycle things!
Check this out. Here I use a wicker basket from a Christmas parcel sent to my office last year. Inside I arrange some plastic flowers (also from last year's parcel), some dolls from my younger years, and a heart-shaped red decorative pillow I received as gift from a friend during a business trip to the Phillippines. Ow, the pink ribbon on the handle I took off from a wedding invitation card. Do you notice the bottle and the Oreo container? They're just lovely and cost nothing.
The only "real" decorative item here is the small Japanese clay painting you see on the right front of the basket.
I want to add some color to the beige couch, so here goes the Forever Friend bear that I got in the gift bag from a friend's son's birthday party.

The "tower" of used Christmas parcel containers, with two cute koala dolls inside.

Have you ever noticed that bookstores have the most wonderful centerpieces made of books and stationeries as their decoration? Anyone can create a similar effect using books with colorful, interesting covers, adding some fun knick-knacks and you're done. Here I add empty tea and mouth-freshener tin cans, with a miniature red robin on a bough that also came with.. .guess what? Another last year's parcel. I think the red bird and the green leaves on the bough represents spring and summer pretty well, don't you think?

Another delightful empty pink biscuit can from Bengawan Solo Coffee. Just eat the cookies, wash the tin can, and you get yourself a fancy container without spending a dime.

Now, this is a rather expensive table spread, which actually is a batik print handmade, handpainted piece of fabric. It's totally a beautiful work of art, and costs a fortune. I didn't buy it, though. It's a gift. I'm such a lucky girl to have this high quality Indonesian craft.

Aaaaand... this is the finished look! Not bad considering that it costs absolutely nothing but a little bit of work and imagination.

Dr. Feelgood

My coworkers mentioned that my today's outfit makes me look like a "Mam Doctor".

I guess that simple white jacket really does the trick to make a girl who's afraid of needle into a distinguished look in the medical field. Ha!

I usually dislike taking a close-up picture because then you can see all the pores and pimples on my face, not to mention that my poor camera doesn't do very well in taking close-ups. However, here I'd like to give you a glimpse of my earrings, shaped like a bow with fake pearl dangling underneath.
They're very catchy-looking with my dark hair as backgroung, and with such strong geometric pattern such as this black and white stripes, I don't feel the need to add neklace to this look. Otherwise, it would be too much.

Now I will tell you how I achieve this look.

First, let me tell you a secret or two. First, this red wide obi belt is vintage. It used to be my Mom's . Yep. My Mom has a lot of high quality things in her closet that she no longer wear. So what's a good daughter to do? Reuse 'em and have fun with 'em, of course! Second, the belt is actually broken, but you cannot see it and it's still wearable, so I'm wearing it! Aaaaand... Third, I wear this red belt BACKWARDS, because it looks so much better that way. See the picture below? The buckle is supposed to be upfront. Oh well, at least with the jacket on, nobody would be able to see that I'm wearing it wrong. On purpose, anyway.
This is how it looks without the jacket, although I would never wear them without the jacket to cover it up. Some girls at work thought that this is a one-piece dress, with the belt and everything built onto the dress. Actually the whole ensemble consists of 3 pieces, as you can see in the pirctures below:
  1. The black and white striped sleeves top (It's really old, like 10-years-old. I'm glad I haven't thrown it away!)
  2. The red wide belt (worn backwards)
  3. The black wrap A-line skirt.
